Fuels West Petroleum
A locally owned and operated fuel supplier for Western Australia
Our origins go back to the early 1990's when, while running our mobile mechanical business, we became aware that regional communities and businesses were being charged excessive prices for fuel and lubricants compared to their city counterparts. These price differences were excessive and could not be justified as freight costs.
We opened the doors at Manjimup Fuels in 1994. Initially beginning with our mechanical customer base and linking with a small lubricant manufacturer in Perth, we were able to reduce lubricant prices between 20% and 40 %. Such was the effect of this price reduction and the positive effect it had on the business community that we were approached by our customers to look at the fuel components of their businesses. Initially we were reluctant to enter the fuel market due to the high entry cost and low margins. But around this time the multi national fuel companies were rationalizing their distributor network to the city and we realised the opportunity to develop an alternative supply network based in the Manjimup area.
The initial purchase of a small delivery truck to provide a service to Manjimup and the surrounding area was our first major investment into providing an alternative in the fuel market. The effect on the multinational distributor network was immediate - like a brick tied to a piece of elastic the fuel and lubricant prices fell, in some cases up to 50%. Thankfully a number of astute customers were able to recognize that the companies were attempting to buy them back and that without Manjimup Fuels their prices would soon return to their old level. Even though these cuts benefited the whole community the loyalty and trust displayed by the majority of Manjimup Fuels customers continued to encourage Guy and the team.
With the major companies margins tightening and their inability to buy back their previous cash cow customers, the arrival of Dangerous Goods authorities to investigate Manjimup Fuels was not surprising. However, this action only served to further reinforce our determination to continue the fight for competitive fuel and oil prices in the country.
The construction of a 24 hr fuel depot in Margerison Street Manjimup, meeting all the latest environmental and safety issues, was undertaken in 1996 to cement Manjimup Fuels as an alternative to the Major Fuel companies. Several upgrades of the Depot have occurred over the last ten years as our share of the fuel market has increased, interestingly in a market that has been retracting due to the downturn in the timber and horticultural industries.
The name change to Fuels West Petroleum in 1999 and the development of a distinctive Logo reflected our desire to increase our market reach and influence outside the immediate area. We have succeeded in this, with regular runs through the South West and Great Southern, with the purchase of Fuels West Hilltop Station in Denmark as a strategic acquisition to provide us with a mid-point for drop off and pick up of fuel supplies.
The purchase of the Denmark Hilltop Service Station means that we can now provide our valued customers a very competitve fuel price in the Great Southern with Diesel, Unleaded and Premium 24hrs a day. With a convenient self activated card system. Payment available with Bank Eftpos and Credit cards or a Fuels West fuel card obtainable with an Application form.
We have also expanded our services at our Manjimup depot, with a staff member on site every Tuesday and Thursday to help with your fuel and lubricant enquiries. With confidence in our customer base and a will to succeed we have increased our distribution fleet to now be able to provide a fuel supply and delivery service through out the state of Western Australia thus providing the "Real Alternative" to the multinationals.
